SUMMARY:Native Life in the City Live Artist Spotlight w/ Cyn Masterson
DESCRIPTION:Join United Indians’ Arts Program Manager and Sacred Circle Gallery Curator\, Hank Cooper\, and artist Cynthia Masterson of Blue Dot Beadwork in a live discussion about one of her latest creations\, “Recipe for a Quarantine”. “Recipe for a Quarantine” tells a quarantine story through beadwork and illustrates how Cynthia moves out of her Comanche traditional designs and color palettes to incorporate the collective forced adaptation of understanding how connection is essential among our Urban Native community. Cynthia will also discuss how this piece contributes to a culinary theme in her body of work and how technology has played an important role during this time.\nThroughout the conversation we will be holding a raffle for one of Cynthia’s handmade pieces of jewelry. Those who tune in via Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center and make a donation during the live stream will automatically be entered into the raffle to win the prize. *Donations must be a minimum of $20.00 and must be submitted through our official online giving campaign webpage linked just below.\nhttps://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/uiatfnativelifeinthecity\nWhere Cynthia got her name:\nBorn and raised in Oklahoma\, Cynthia Masterson now lives and beads in Seattle\, Washington. She carries the name of her great-great-great grandmother Cynthia Ann Parker\, mother of Quannah Parker\, one of the last Comanche chiefs. She is an enrolled member of the Comanche tribe and a Titchywy decendant.\nWhen she’s not traveling to Oklahoma to see family and friends you’ll find her walking Sweeps\, the whippet\, with her husband Bret of twenty plus years. She beads anywhere\, showing the 3-drop gourd stitch to everyone she meets.

SUMMARY:Fort Lawton Takeover Celebration - 50th Anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate with us March 8\, 2020 at 10:30 a.m.\, as we honor those who fought tirelessly for the creation of Daybreak Star as a social and cultural home for our local urban Native community. \nIn 1970\, in response to disproportionate rates of poverty and little access to necessary health and social services\, hundreds of Native activists and their allies occupied Fort Lawton\, a recently decommissioned U.S. Army Base. This grueling month long occupation\, met with both outside support as well as military and police violence\, resulted in activists obtaining a lease to nineteen acres of land in what is now known as Discovery Park\, and the eventual creation of Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. Since our founding in 1970 by beloved leader Bernie Whitebear\, United Indians’ has grown to support ten different programs which serve 1\,000 clients each year and provide a whole host of critical services and cultural activities. \nJoin us as we march down Bernie Whitebear Way in recognition of the powerful work of past and present activists in uplifting our Urban Native community\, and stay for a free community meal. \n
