SUMMARY:Weaving Workshop for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:As an “Urban Indian\,” I recognize some of the barriers that prevent many urban\, displaced and/or unrecognized indigenous peoples from accessing our traditional weaving materials\, and thus\, can prevent us from weaving altogether. Awareness and removal of noxious weeds\, when done properly\, can not only help restore balance within our ecosystem\, but some of these plant materials are incredibly safe and useful for weaving. \nIn this workshop for beginning weavers\, we will discuss means to identify a handful of invasive species which are: 1) recommended for removal\, 2) accessible in an urban setting\, 3) safe to remove\, and 4) easy to work with. With these materials\, we will have an opportunity to practice a number of different weaving techniques\, including those used to make roses\, baskets\, cordage\, and headbands. Exact techniques will be decided on by participants. Instruction for multiple weaving techniques may be offered if time permits. \nFeel free to bring in your own materials if you have something you prefer to use. All other tools and materials will be provided. Please prepare to walk about the grounds outside to practice identification of invasive species. \nFacilitated by Stephanie Leon Riedl

SUMMARY:Native American Foster Care Support Group
DESCRIPTION:NAFC Support Groups is a Native American Foster Care Support Group\, sponsored by United Indians\, Casey Familys Program and Fostering Together. Our group is for Foster Parents\, Adoptive Parents\, and Relative Caregivers whom are taking care of Native American Foster Care children. \nWe meet every 4th Wednesday of each month at Casey Family Programs in Seattle\, WA. Our meeting times are from 6:30pm-8:30pm. At our group Caregivers receive 2 hour foster care training credits\, and for the children we provide cultural activities. Each month we provide a nutritious meal for our families who attend. \nThis group is created because of the many requests of folks that wanted a group more north of King county\, and couldn’t attend the Cowlitz group because it was a bit too far south. Also requests to have a meeting other than a second of Wednesday of each month. \nHave you ever considered of becoming a licensed Foster Parent? If so\, then you too are also encouraged to attend. Foster Care Licensing professionals from United Indians and Casey Family are present each month to answer questions about the process of becoming licensed. \nFor more information\, please contact: Kristie Lund-\nE-mail: klund@casey.org; Phone; 206.709.2106 or Thaidra Alfred\, Cowichan Tribes at email: talfred@unitedindians.org
