SUMMARY:Seafair Indian Days Powwow - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:To Our Relatives\, Friends and Supporters: \nIt is after heavy deliberation and with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of our 33rd annual Seafair Indian Days Powwow\, which was scheduled to take place July 17-19\, 2020 at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle\, WA. \nThis was an exceedingly difficult decision in light of what this powwow means to our community. Since the first intertribal powwow on these grounds 33 years ago\, organized by our founder Bernie Whitebear\, we have only been forced to cancel once. \nWe have a great number of Elders who attend our powwow\, and who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 – cherished parents\, grandparents\, great grandparents and protectors of our languages\, cultures and stories. With this decision\, we choose to prioritize their health\, and the health of our communities at large. We appreciate your kindness and understanding\, and hope you will return to dance\, sing\, drum and gather with us next year. \nSincerely\, \nMike Tulee (Yakama) – UIATF Executive Director

SUMMARY:Fort Lawton Takeover Celebration - 50th Anniversary!
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate with us March 8\, 2020 at 10:30 a.m.\, as we honor those who fought tirelessly for the creation of Daybreak Star as a social and cultural home for our local urban Native community. \nIn 1970\, in response to disproportionate rates of poverty and little access to necessary health and social services\, hundreds of Native activists and their allies occupied Fort Lawton\, a recently decommissioned U.S. Army Base. This grueling month long occupation\, met with both outside support as well as military and police violence\, resulted in activists obtaining a lease to nineteen acres of land in what is now known as Discovery Park\, and the eventual creation of Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. Since our founding in 1970 by beloved leader Bernie Whitebear\, United Indians’ has grown to support ten different programs which serve 1\,000 clients each year and provide a whole host of critical services and cultural activities. \nJoin us as we march down Bernie Whitebear Way in recognition of the powerful work of past and present activists in uplifting our Urban Native community\, and stay for a free community meal. \n

SUMMARY:Weaving Workshop for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:As an “Urban Indian\,” I recognize some of the barriers that prevent many urban\, displaced and/or unrecognized indigenous peoples from accessing our traditional weaving materials\, and thus\, can prevent us from weaving altogether. Awareness and removal of noxious weeds\, when done properly\, can not only help restore balance within our ecosystem\, but some of these plant materials are incredibly safe and useful for weaving. \nIn this workshop for beginning weavers\, we will discuss means to identify a handful of invasive species which are: 1) recommended for removal\, 2) accessible in an urban setting\, 3) safe to remove\, and 4) easy to work with. With these materials\, we will have an opportunity to practice a number of different weaving techniques\, including those used to make roses\, baskets\, cordage\, and headbands. Exact techniques will be decided on by participants. Instruction for multiple weaving techniques may be offered if time permits. \nFeel free to bring in your own materials if you have something you prefer to use. All other tools and materials will be provided. Please prepare to walk about the grounds outside to practice identification of invasive species. \nFacilitated by Stephanie Leon Riedl
