Native Youth Reading Challenge!
October 18, 2024 – Spring 2025
Representation Matters!
Selecting books written by Native authors will allow Native youth readers to discover a wealth of literature, and immerse themselves in rich cultures, histories, and traditions.
In partnership with Native Education departments and other nonprofit organizations in Western Washington school districts, UIATEC is proud to kick off the Native Youth Reading Challenge for K-12 students and their families.
We want to empower young Native readers by bringing them together to share in the joy of reading and celebrate Native authors’ contributions to literature.
Native high school students from each district will be part of the planning team, leading us toward a better, more inclusive, and engaging program.
Each participant reads books written for/by the Native community and documents reading time, submits summaries, and/or participates in celebration events! We will have a near-peer mentorship between K-3 and 8-12th graders, benefitting both groups.
